What is Kali Linux?
Kali Linux is a free offensive security software which allows the user to conduct penetration testing, computer forensics, reverse engineering, and security research.
What You Need
Computer with internet connection
WinRAR
Kali Linux Software
VMWare Workstation
First you want to head over to https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/ and download the Kali Linux 32 or 64 bit software.
If you are unsure of what type your pc is: click start -- type in system information -- locate System Type which displays the bit value.
While that downloads, go to https://www.win-rar.com/start.html?&L=0 to download WinRAR, a free file unpacking software.
Once WinRAR installs, double click the file and hit Yes when prompted with the question “ Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”
Then click Install -- Ok-- Done
Once Kali Linux finishes installing right click and select extract to … as detailed below
This will extract the files into a subdirectory folder.
Next you want to install VMWare Workstation Player at https://www.vmware.com/products/workstation-player/workstation-player-evaluation.html this is a virtual machine where you can import and run Kali from.
After hitting download and double clicking the software, hit Yes when prompted with the question “ Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?
Then click Next -- read and accept the license agreement -- read the prompts and click Next-- click Install.
Once the installation is complete hit Finish.
After, open up the VMWare Workstation Player Application -- Select continue -- Click finish.
Next you should arrive at this screen, in the top left corner select player-- file-- open.
Then double click on the zipped file you created previously and open the Kali Linux File.
Once you're at this screen you have the ability to edit or start the virtual machine.
If you were to edit you can tweak with the memory and processor cores allocated to the virtual machine.
Once you start the virtual machine you want to select I Copied it (If asked if the virtual machine was moved or copied) -- Download and Install (VMWare Tools for Linux) -- Close (Once the download is completed) .
When prompted with a username and password type in kali for both.
Now you are in the virtual machine and are successfully using Kali Linux! Once you want to power down the virtual machine hit the power button in the top right corner and select Shut Down when prompted
